About me

I am sharing this methodology with you.

Why am I doing this, you ask? I want our sport to grow, become technically advanced and beautiful, and, as a result, more competitive.

Why am I doing this, you ask? I want our sport to grow, become technically advanced and beautiful, and, as a result, more competitive.

In each skating element, I’ve tested numerous execution variations, different positions for the free leg, and various techniques for the supporting knee and torso. I also developed step combinations from these elements. The result is a method that allows mastering all the basic skating elements, steps, and turns, enabling skaters to perform them at high speed, with great edge quality, and in aesthetically pleasing positions.

My approach
My journey

“My mission is to share knowledge that has been tested over years and through results, perfecting figure skaters' techniques and transforming their skating into an art that captivates audiences and brings victories”

My journey
While studying at the university, I began coaching. After my internship in my final year, I was taken under the wing of the Honored Coach of Russia, Inna Germanovna Goncharenko. During my work with her, I began to transform all the experience I had gained in ice dancing into single skating.
In 2008, I graduated from the Moscow State Academy of Physical Culture.
Until I was 12, I skated in singles, then spent a year in pair skating with the team of N.M. Mozer, after which I transitioned to ice dancing. I trained under the guidance of coaches such as: S.L. Alekseeva and E.V. Kustarov; L.V. Filina and M.I. Gurevich.
My approach to coaching
Once these elements are mastered, we move on to analyzing and practicing steps and turns (loops, mohawks, choctaws, hooks, twizzles, skates, and loops). Once these are also mastered, we move on to the second stage.
Once these elements are mastered, we move on to analyzing and practicing steps and turns (loops, mohawks, choctaws, hooks, twizzles, skates, and loops). Once these are also mastered, we move on to the second stage.
Then, the main focus shifts to mastering the basic skating elements (basic step, run-throughs, crossovers, arcs, cross-rolls).
In the second stage, I begin incorporating all skating elements into step sequences, combining them with various transitional steps. For example: a single three-turn LFO-hook RFI-skate LFO-run-through backward, then repeat with the other leg.
Mastering all three stages lays a solid foundation, but only daily training will ensure powerful, sharp, and impressive gliding.
The third stage involves choreographing programs or selecting and complicating connecting and transitional steps within existing programs for skaters with 3rd, 2nd, and 1st Junior levels, which leads to higher component scores. Starting from the 3rd sports grade, work on step sequences is added.

Then, for already established sequences and familiar steps, we add different arm movements and body work: tilts and bends with a clear shift in the center of gravity, which is one of the features of step sequences.
We start with the most common combinations.
As we progress, we move on to more complex variations and alternative execution methods.

In the first session, we focus on breaking down the basics of skating technique: body and hip position, the work of the support and free leg, push-off, proper pattern, etc.

Stage 1
It all begins with an introduction.
Working with athletes of various levels and ages, I have always had one goal — to achieve the greatest result in the least amount of training sessions.

I purchased lessons to refresh my knowledge (I hadn’t skated in several years). In the end,
I got so hooked that I started training with Ilya online – I’m on the ice, and he’s connected via headphones. I really started to feel the ice in a completely new way! During each call, it feels like the coach is standing right next to me. Thank you for this approach!

I’ve been skating for a couple of years, but couldn’t move on to advanced elements. After just a few lessons from the course,
I realized my mistakes — turns out it wasn’t just about my upper body! Now I skate with much more confidence. I finally got over my fear of spirals — I struggled with them for so long. Thank you so much! 🙏

To be honest, I didn’t believe Zoom training could work — but I take my words back! Ilya is a true professional, he sees every mistake right away. Working with him is incredibly motivating 🚀

Thank you so much! Now I’m set to polish all the points you highlighted.

I'm just starting to coach kids, and sometimes I struggle to explain why things need to be done a certain way. I lack experience. But now I have a clear plan on how to teach the skating technique and explain things in a way that my students not only listen but truly understand. Thank you so much for these lessons, you are a true mentor! 🔥

I live outside the city, so getting to the rink can be expensive and inconvenient. Huge thanks to Ilya Vladimirovich for allowing me to analyze my technique from the comfort of my home, right in front of the mirror, and then confidently step onto the ice! Now everyone is watching me 😎

Ilya Vladimirovich, once again thank you for these valuable lessons and the call!

The course is packed with value. I completely rethought so many aspects of my skating — even the things I used to avoid, thinking “Why waste time on this?” Now I understand how important attention to detail really is. The information is laid out step by step, from basic to advanced, and you go straight from theory to practice!

Example of a video program analysis
The first Axel entry from the difficult turns includes only a bracket right before the jump — that’s not enough. You should add something right after the first circle, like a loop, and maybe a counter or rocker after the mohawk.

Before the Salchow, almost all turns are executed over the left shoulder (except for one three-turn) — this creates an imbalance. Turns should be distributed evenly throughout the program, using both shoulders.

+ before the Salchow, there isn’t enough upper body movement.

From the Salchow to the layback spin, again, all turns are over the left shoulder. You can add a difficult turn in the entry to the layback.

Layback – great job, you’ve nailed it! (but in the Biellmann position, the second hand should hold the blade)

The layback exit (the spiral) repeats a move that was already used — repetitions like that are very noticeable and best avoided.

I'll send a voice message with detailed feedback on the step sequence.

Combo spin – good job! But be sure to hold the edge change — ideally four revolutions, even though the rules require three.

In the entry to the spin (after the jump into the layback), the spiral appears again — it's a repeated element. And I don’t see any complex transitional turns there.

Summary:

  1. There’s a major imbalance in the transitional steps — around 85% of steps and turns are done over the left shoulder.
  2. There’s a lack of complex turns and upper body involvement in transitions.
  3. Step sequence blocks are constructed incorrectly (they won't be counted) + there are many repeated steps (e.g., three left backward inside loops).

Working on step sequences
(02)
  • Analyzing the number of difficult turns and steps. Removing repetitions and adding missing elements.

  • Balancing turns performed on both left and right shoulders.

  • Rebuilding the sequence for cleaner entries into difficult turns — this helps improve execution and increase the level awarded.

  • Verifying correct structure of the two required blocks with three difficult turns each.

  • Enhancing the overall pattern and edge quality.

  • Adding upper body movement and refining choreography for greater complexity.

Choreography of programs
(03)
Next, the choreography is created:

4 hours for the Short Program (SP)
5 hours for the Free Program (FP)

Afterward, the athlete is recorded performing the new program and the video is sent to the coach/parent.
Recommendation:

A couple of days after choreography, a 2-hour session with me to refine and practice the new program. This helps to eliminate inaccuracies in choreography and accelerate the adaptation process.
Together with the main coach, we make decisions on:
  1. Music selection and arrangement
  2. Defining the character and theme
  3. Costume design
  4. Defining content (program elements)
